Skills are the specific components of evaluated subject material.
Only one skill set can be attached to a course, but multiple courses could share the same skill set.
Each skill set can use two grading schemes.
Skills that are added to a grading policy only apply to cycles within a term; they must be populated again for the following term.
Skills cannot be added by teachers.
They are generally used in grading policies for pre-K and kindergarten students, who don't get numeric or letter grades.
They can also be used in hybrid grading policies that are a combination of both skills and assignment-based grades. Both are shown on the report card, but averages are determined by assignment grades. One situation in which a campus might use this option would be for higher level language classes, where teachers want to indicate both a student's proficiency in speaking and grades on assignments.
Select Students from the Jump to Module pull-down list in the upper right corner.
Select Schedule Manager from the Scheduling menu, and that window opens.
Click the icon for the campus for which you want to add skills, and the Edit Schedule window opens.
Click on the Skill Sets tab.
Click Add Skill Set. A window opens allowing you to define the skill set.
Enter a Name for the skill set — for example, Participation, Counts 1-10, Native Proficiency, or Conversational Proficiency.
Click Add Skill, and the Skills Category fields are displayed.
Complete the fields as described.
Cumulative: Check the box if the skill only has to be evaluated once in each term. Leave the box unchecked if the skill will be evaluated in each report card cycle. For example, Participation would not be Cumulative as it would be evaluated each cycle; Counts 1-10 would be Cumulative since once the student masters that skill you would move to a more advanced skill and not re-evaluate the mastered one.
Alternate: Each skill set can use two different grading schemes to be selected when the grading policy is created. Checking this box indicates that this skill category should use the alternate, rather than the primary, grading scheme designated in the grading policy. For example, Participation might use an ESNU grading scheme; while Counts 1-10 might use one of “Mastered vs Not-Mastered”.
Category: Enter a definition of the type of skill. There can be multiple skills in a category.
Name: Enter the name of the skill that will appear on the report card.
Description: Enter a more detailed definition of the skill that will appear in detailed reporting.
Click Add Category, and repeat step 8 to add skills.
Click Save when you've finished adding skills to this skill set. Example
Repeat steps 5-10 to add more skill sets.
