Calendar models determine the number of terms in a year and the number of grading periods/report card cycles per term.
Terms are:
Semester: 2 terms/year, 18 weeks each
Trimester: 3 terms/year, 12 weeks each
Quadmester: 4 terms/year, 9 weeks each
Grading periods are either 6 weeks or 9 weeks.
Calendar models
Semester - 6 Weeks: 3 6-week grading periods in each of 2 terms
Semester - 9 Weeks: 2 9-week grading periods in each of 2 terms
Trimester - 6 Weeks: 2 6-week grading periods in each of 3 terms
Quadmester: 1 9-week grading period in each of 4 terms
Typically, charters use the Semester - 9 Weeks model, while ISDs use the Semester - 6 Weeks model because they are subject to the UIL regulations for school sports. Students must pass the first 6 weeks of class in order to continue to play. If they fail the first 6 weeks, they have 3 weeks to bring up their grades.
